What is a FUE hair transplant?

FUE stands for “follicular unit extraction” and involves a process in which healthy, producing hair follicles are harvested from the back or sides of your head and transplanted to areas where thicker hair growth is desired. The FDA-cleared NeoGraft device used for this procedure is one of the most advanced FUE hair transplant systems on the market. It uses a specially automated tool to harvest single healthy follicles from the donor site rather than the strip method of previous hair transplant technology. FUE offers a minimally invasive, proven treatment option to restore hair in the areas where you want it most with virtually undetectable impact on your scalp once complete healing takes place.

What are the benefits of a FUE hair transplant?

A FUE hair transplant is a far cry from hair restoration procedures of the past that often left something to be desired as far as results. The benefits of this amazing treatment include:

  • Permanent, natural-looking results
  • State-of-the-art, minimally invasive hair restoration technique
  • No stitches and virtually undetectable scarring
  • Donor area healing within a few days
  • Less discomfort during the procedure

Am I a good candidate for a hair transplant with the FUE method?

Our FUE hair transplant offers a great hair restoration option for a wide variety of people dealing with hair loss. Ideal candidates are generally experiencing hair loss near the top of the head, along the hairline, or around the crown. FUE hair transplants work best for people who have a natural condition that has caused their hair loss or for those who have experienced some form of trauma to the area that resulted in the hair ceasing to grow.  Furthermore, the higher hair density you have in the donor area, the more grafts available for transplantation. People who have naturally wavy or curly hair usually require fewer grafts to achieve their goals. Many factors can influence whether you’re a good candidate for a FUE hair transplant, so your first step to finding out if it’s right for you is to schedule your private consultation at Culture.

What can I expect during a FUE hair transplant?

On the day of your procedure, your highly skilled FUE transplant expert will shave down the hair in the donor and transplant areas. After administering mild anesthesia to minimize discomfort during the procedure, the healthy follicles will then be removed from your scalp using the NeoGraft micropunch device. We’ll then make a series of tiny incisions where the follicles will be transplanted and gently insert the follicles one by one to recreate your natural hairline. The treatment area will then be cleaned and bandaged for recovery, and we’ll go over all the at-home instructions so you can help encourage optimum results.

What’s the recovery from a FUE hair transplant like?

The average recovery time from this procedure is short in most cases, but you’ll still need to take it easy for a few days. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work in a day or two, depending on the type of work they do, of course. We’ll make sure to go over the best course of action in returning to work for you as well as provide a personalized recovery plan.

It’s important to be gentle with the donor and transplant areas for the first couple of weeks. You’ll need to protect your scalp from the sun and anything that would cause friction to the area. Avoid washing your hair for the first several days, and don’t wear hats of any kind those first couple of weeks. It’s best to sleep with your head elevated to reduce any swelling. Over-the-counter pain medicine can be taken to help with any discomfort you may experience. The donor area will typically heal in a few days, and there will be no linear scars or stitches.

Does a FUE hair transplant involve any side effects?

While side effects with this procedure are rare, the most common that may be experienced include minor bleeding, swelling, itching, or dry skin. While mild pain, swelling, and minor bleeding may occur right after the procedure, these usually stop after a few days. Itching is the most common reaction, which is a result of your scalp beginning to heal. But don’t even think about scratching your scalp during this time to avoid disturbing the transplanted hair follicles. Infection after a FUE hair transplant is rare, but it is a possibility…especially if you don’t follow proper at-home care instructions.

What results can I expect from a FUE hair transplant?

After about two weeks, the transplanted hair will begin to shed (which is totally normal) and new hair will begin to grow over the course of the next few months. Approximately 98% of transplanted follicles successfully take to their new home and grow as normal!
